I loved the stories in The Toast where Daniel Mallory Ortberg replaced text, like this one. When I started this project, I had recently read someone on Twitter say they loved to make bots to automate jokes they thought were funny. I wanted to try.
I have quite a few favorites. For example:
Psalm 85:7: Shew us thy mercy, O LORD, and grant us dat ass.
Genesis 15:3: And Abram said, Look, buddy, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.
Psalm 120:5: Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar D:
Exodus 20:6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my EULA.
You can make your own!
It used to show a list of recent searches, since a lot of my friends’ ideas for replacements were funny too. However, I eventually turned it off when I saw how many results were either shoddy automated SQL injection attempts, or cringe attempts to be “edgy” I didn’t really want on my domain.
I used it to

- Learn more about the web (yikes at that design, right?)
- Learn an important lesson about hosting user generated content
