2025 1129 Typography, CSS, and wrapping paper

I’m not a professional web designer or frontend developer at all, but I really enjoy working with CSS. That wasn’t always the case; at first I found it very frustrating. But as I practiced working with it, and as it improved over time, I’ve come to really like using it.

Similarly, spending time trying and tweaking fonts is a lot of fun. I’ve definitely spent hours on Google Fonts trying different options for a new project.

I’ve always wanted to learn how to draw, but never stuck with it through the learning phase during which my work sucks. But working with CSS and selecting fonts got me into a tight enough improvement feedback loop that it seems like it satisfies some of that creative visual urge.

I think this is also why I love wrapping paper. It’s a craft that I can make look good without much skill, just a small amount of practice and selecting paper and supporting materials that look good to me visually.
